Magdalena Wurth is an agricultural scientist and an enthusiastic home mushroom grower, born into a family that has spent the better part of three decades cultivating fungi on logs and substrate in the wooded country north of the Danube. With her father Herbert — a former chemist who has worked on mushroom cultivation in both lab and garden for more than thirty years — she runs the Waldviertler Pilzgarten, a working mushroom garden in Lower Austria that offers classes, advice and starter material to home growers across the German-speaking world.
With her father she co-authored Home-Grown Mushrooms from Scratch, a practical guide to cultivating nineteen different species — from button mushrooms and shiitakes through to truffles and reishi — outdoors and indoors, with recipes and methods for preserving the harvest.
